The fall season is known for many glorious things—leaf-peeping, Halloween, perhaps even some apple-picking—but true fashion people know it to be, above all else, one crucial thing: Coat season.
After the sweltering summer months, fall is prime time to dust off your best outerwear, pull it out of the back of your closet, and once again make the coat the focal point. And without fail, every season, there’s an enduring style that always pops up on all of the cool it girls. . . a groovy Penny Lane coat, that is.
Flash back to the 2000 classic film Almost Famous, and Penny Lane’s free-spirited wardrobe (worn by actor Kate Hudson) still feels extremely fresh. In fact, her shaggy, faux fur-trimmed coat is so iconic that has since been countlessly recreated by modern-day designers, and worn by celebrities such as Bella Hadid and Zoe Kravitz.
But what if we told you. . . that there’s a new fall It coat in town this year. One that still feels Penny Lane-coded, but more unexpectedly so.
Cue this season’s Connor Ives robe coat. First debuted during the American designer’s fall 2025 runway show, the luxurious outerwear is now having a moment. Made of a silk-satin base and trimmed with repurposed vintage fox fur along the collar and cuffs, this bohemian topper has already been spotted on several occasions this fall season—on A-listers like Kendall Jenner and Kate Moss, no less—despite its hefty price tag ($6,000 and up).
Moss was one of the first trendsetters to rock it out on the streets—all the way back in January, in fact. The supermodel wore one of Ives’s shorter black silk robe coats, pairing it with a classic pair of light-wash skinny jeans. A few months later, Zoe Kravitz also wore a light-blue iteration while attending an SNL after-party with boyfriend Harry Styles. A star coat was born.
This autumnal season, the slightly 1970s statement piece has only continued to grow in its power. Model Laura Harrier wore the same black version as Moss this month, with capri leggings and pointed pumps in L.A. Just this week, Kendall Jenner wore a long, cream style, finishing off her look with black high-waisted trousers and a tonal Chanel maxi tote.
If you really think about it, it’s no wonder the Connor Ives coats are becoming a breakout hit of the season: Like the OG Penny Lane coats, they are a total no-brainer: You can pair them with your most discreet everyday basics, and the striking piece instantly does all of the work for your outfit. It makes a statement, but in a super low-lift way.
Isn’t that what you want out of a splurge-worthy investment coat?
Most importantly, though, the Ives coats are super cozy and plushy—perfect for those frigid fall days. It’s essentially a (chic) way to wrap yourself up in a snuggly blanket; only, you can also wear it out to dinner or a party and still look very put-together. Sounds like a win-win to us.
