How to Read a Skincare Ingredient List
Under most labeling rules, ingredients are listed as INCI names in descending order of concentration until roughly 1% — below that, they may appear in any order. Colourants and fragrance components often follow separate rules, so position is a hint, not an exact measurement.
- The first few entries are usually the base: water, solvents and main emollients.
- Anything after “Parfum”, “Phenoxyethanol” or “1,2-Hexanediol” is typically at or below about 1%.
- A long ingredient list does not make a product better or worse — the formula as a whole matters.
Common Skincare Ingredient Functions
- Humectants:Draw and hold water in the outer skin layers — glycerin, hyaluronic acid, butylene glycol.
- Emollients & occlusives:Soften skin and slow moisture loss — squalane, dimethicone, shea butter, petrolatum.
- Skin conditioning:A broad group covering niacinamide, panthenol, ceramides and plant extracts.
- Antioxidants:Vitamin C, vitamin E, ferulic acid and friends that help formulas and skin resist oxidation.
- UV filters:Organic and mineral filters such as zinc oxide, avobenzone and octinoxate.
- Cleansing agents:Surfactants that lift oil and dirt — from SLES to mild amino-acid surfactants.
- Preservatives:Keep microbes out of water-based products — phenoxyethanol, sodium benzoate and others.
- Fragrance & colourants:“Parfum”, essential oils, declared fragrance allergens, CI-numbered dyes and pigments.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an INCI ingredient list?
INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) is the standardized naming system used on cosmetic labels. Most markets require products to list every ingredient as its INCI name in descending order of concentration down to about 1%.
How do I check skincare ingredients?
Copy the full ingredient list from your product or its online listing, paste it into the checker above, and click Analyze Ingredients. Each recognized ingredient is explained in plain language and grouped by function.
Is this skincare ingredient checker free?
Yes. The checker is free, requires no account and no signup, and runs entirely in your browser.
Does the checker identify every ingredient?
The local dictionary covers several hundred of the most common INCI names and their aliases. Names outside the dictionary are shown as unrecognized rather than guessed, and the dictionary keeps growing.
Can an ingredient list tell me if a product is safe?
No. An ingredient list alone cannot determine safety — that depends on concentration, formulation, manufacturing and your own skin. This tool explains what ingredients commonly do; it does not score safety.
Are my ingredient lists stored?
No. Parsing happens entirely in your browser. The list is not uploaded, logged or stored anywhere; refreshing the page clears it.
Why are some ingredients not recognized?
Mostly because the name is outside the local dictionary — new actives, uncommon trade names or misspellings. Unrecognized names are kept in your results in original order so nothing is silently dropped.
Ingredient descriptions are informational. Product performance and suitability depend on the full formulation, concentration, use and individual response. This tool is not medical advice and does not rate product safety. Read our beauty coverage · Outfit color palette
