The Ordering Rules
- Thin to thick, water before oil: liquids and serums go on first, creams and oils seal them in.
- Sunscreen is always the last morning step — anything over it breaks the film.
- Night adds makeup removal and treatment steps; exfoliators and wash-off masks sit right after cleansing.
- Strong actives in the same night? Alternate instead of layering — retinoids and strong acids on different evenings is the conservative play.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does serum go before or after moisturizer?
Serum first, then moisturizer. Serums are watery and carry the actives; creams and lotions are thicker and seal them in. General rule: thin to thick, water before oil.
What is the correct morning skincare order?
Cleanser → toner → serum(s) → eye cream → lotion or cream → sunscreen. Sunscreen is always last in the morning.
What is the correct evening skincare order?
Makeup remover → cleanser → (weekly exfoliator or mask) → toner → treatment serums → eye cream → lotion/cream → face oil last.
Can I use acids and retinol together?
Layering strong acids and retinoids in one night is a common irritation trigger. The conservative approach: alternate nights, or acids in the morning with retinol at night — and build up slowly either way.
Where do face masks fit in the routine?
Wash-off masks go right after cleansing; sheet masks after toner and before serum — pat in the remaining essence and continue. Overnight sleeping masks replace or follow your cream.
Do I need toner and eye cream?
Neither is strictly required — the non-negotiable core is cleanse, moisturize, sunscreen. Toner adds hydration for dehydrated skin; eye cream is a moisturizer tuned for thin skin. Add them for goals, not obligation.
