For its spring 2027 fashion show on Tuesday, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons presented a collection dedicated entirely to skirts. Vogue’s Nicole Phelps declared it a “people pleaser from start to finish, direct and designed to stoke real world desire.” A rave. Many in the industry echoed her sentiment.
Mrs. Prada’s love for skirts is well-documented.
“The skirt for me is like a T-shirt,” she said in a 2006 interview with Charlie Rose. Fan accounts dedicated to the designer’s personal style have documented her wearing skirts almost exclusively: with sweaters, shirts, and cropped boxy jackets; with kitten heels and loafers—and with Prada-eccentric accessories.
It’s proof that the skirt, for all of its supposedly fussy and femme connotations, can be a real wardrobe workhorse, able to infuse a look with personality without pushing it over the top. “It can be… eccentric,” Prada said in the same interview, “but it doesn’t change you as much because it’s waist down.”
Perhaps it’s fashion’s current appetite for a dose of eccentricity that has led to the influx of great skirts on the market today–and not just from Prada. After years dominated by straightforward denim and trousers, a skirt offers an easy way to introduce a little more character into the everyday wardrobe.
In a backstage preview before the show, the New York Times reported that Mrs. Prada likened the skirt to “a ‘frame,’ onto which different ideas and personalities could be grafted.” Brands like Dries Van Noten, Khaite, and Saint Laurent continue to put their own stamps on the style, playing with shape, texture, embellishment, and color.
Whether you’re looking for a painterly pencil skirt, a preppy pleat, or a draped sequin number, now is a particularly good time to shop for one. Below, find some of our favorites–and see how we’d style them.
Everyday Precious
An embellished satin skirt, paired with a chunky knit, is a quintessentially Prada combo. You’ll get bonus (Prada) points for slightly clashing colors and a structured tote.
Subverted Prep
Dries Van Noten knows its way around a great skirt, too. We’d style the brand’s printed, pleated wrap with a blousy leather bomber and loafers for contrast.
Uptown Polish
Khaite’s painterly pencil skirt makes a sophisticated statement. Keep the rest of the look simple but sculptural with a cropped jacket, ribbed tank, and slippers.
Subtly Sensual
Saint Laurent’s brocade pencil skirt begs to be worn with sky-high heels and body-skimming knitwear. It’s sexy, but still leaves plenty to the imagination.
Considered Minimalism
Bottega Veneta’s fringed maxi has an artful, slightly bohemian feel. A structured peplum top and statement earrings give it a polished counterpoint.
Miuccia’s World
Low-rise pleated skirts, paired with bra tops and boxy jackets, take their cues from ’90s Prada and current-day Miu Miu. Finish with the brand’s sporty sneakers for an unexpected touch.
A Striking Statement
For an evening out, try Margiela’s maximalist midi skirt with a draped blouse and structured mules –pieces that hold their own without competing with the main event.
