The rules behind the matches
- Neutrals (black, white, grey, navy, beige, denim) carry the outfit — accents stay at roughly 10%.
- When both pieces are neutral, the third piece may take the accent role or stay tonal.
- When top or bottom is already a strong colour, shoes and bag stay quiet.
- Occasion shifts formality: commute and evening prefer darker anchors, leisure and outdoor can go lighter.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the 60/30/10 rule?
A proportion heuristic: about 60% of the visible outfit in a dominant colour (usually the bottom or outer layer), 30% in a secondary colour, and 10% in an accent — bag, shoe detail or accessory.
Both my pieces are neutral — what should the third be?
Either stay tonal (e.g. all navy/grey/beige for a clean look) or let the bag and shoe carry a small warm accent like burgundy or mustard.
