Just like designers, stylists, and armies of interns, fashion week simply wouldn’t exist without models. On the runway, a model embodies a designer’s vision. Outside the shows, however, the vision is all their own. Models in their “off-duty” element have long been a fixation among the fashion crowd, infusing the street style scene with their own brand of nonchalant cool.
The model-off-duty aesthetic is hard to define—part of it, certainly, is the attitude—but there are certain patterns we see again and again. Easy basics are key.
Models love tees and knits that strike a balance between comfortable and cool. Relaxed pants are essential, too—tough denim, cargos, and pleated trousers are reliable go-tos.
On the footwear front, models tend to favor options that can easily take them from show to show, like sneakers, loafers, and boots.
As straightforward as the building blocks may seem, the looks are rarely boring, and that’s what makes them so fun to recreate. Mixed in among the casual separates, you’ll often find an It bag, a great leather jacket, or another standout piece that gives the whole thing personality. The looks below prove it—see and shop them for yourself.
On the Move
Slouchy cargos and a baseball tee seem made for the model off duty. Add a cropped suede trench, belt, and Puma sneakers for running between shows.
Airplane Mode
Dark denim and a henley offer a more textural take on jeans and a tee. The addition of a funnel-neck bomber makes a stylish statement without saying too much. Consider this your next great travel look.
Mad for Plaid
A plaid shirt, thermal tee, and baggy denim take a classic trench out of prim territory and straight into the model off-duty sphere.
Tough Love
There’s no need to shy away from skirts, but in the off-duty world they’re often toughened up with a relaxed hoodie and rugged hikers.
Long and Loose
Chunky sneakers and layered tees bring a sense of insouciance to pleated trousers and a long mac coat. Sporty shades and wired headphones complete the picture.
