Happy (belated) birthday, Dakota Johnson! Last night, the actor turned 37—and she certainly had a lot to celebrate, aside from ringing in her special day. Earlier this week, for one, the star hosted Saturday Night Live (where we even got a cameo from her friend Taylor Swift), and her new film Verity, co-starring Anne Hathaway, is also a total box office hit. So, cue the festivities!
To ring in the eventful week, Johnson hosted an intimate birthday dinner at Via Carota in New York City last night. (A hotspot restaurant that so happens to be a favorite of Swift’s.) While Taylor herself was not present at the dinner, a few other notable names were, including Johnson’s close friend Jennifer Lawrence and her husband Cooke Maroney.
Our question is: Was the dress code for Johnson’s birthday dinner Practical Magic-themed? Because the fashions were totally witchy—and totally chic. Johnson herself did birthday-girl style in a black lace Stella McCartney maxi gown, complete with a black fur-trimmed leather coat and strappy heels. How very America Horror Story: Coven of her. Her golden chainmail bag rounded out the look with just the right amount of gilded finesse.
Lawrence, meanwhile, opted for a black sheer button-up top, paired with a velvety floral trouser and leopard-printed mules. Her styling was perhaps more eccentric and less witchy—something your fab quirky aunt would wear—though it did make us think of Nicole Kidman’s wardrobe in Practical Magic.
And sure, perhaps Johnson and Lawrence were not intentionally embracing spooky season with their wardrobes last night. But witchy style has been having a major moment on the runways—so leave it to two trendsetters like them to be right on trend if so.
